CINCINNATI, Ohio – The CCU men's volleyball squad returned home for a couple of matches on Saturday afternoon, when they played host to both St. Andrew's University and Calumet College of St. Joseph. Having already played and defeated both teams on the road this season, the Eagles completed the season sweep with victories over both teams. CCU started the day off with another three set sweep over the win less Knights of St. Andrew's 25-17, 25-17, and 25-13. The Eagles were looking to cap off the perfect afternoon, and it was indeed a thrilling five set victory over CCSJ 23-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-17, and 19-17.
The Eagles, for the second straight time this season, had an easy three set victory over St. Andrews. CCU came out and took control of the match early, and never let the Knights get comfortable in their sets.
The match against CCSJ however, was a complete contrast. The Crimson Wave, having competed against St. Andrew's in the match before, came out in the finale and made the Eagles work for their victory. Taking the first two sets in competitive fashion, CCU knew they had to dig deep in order to earn the win. And man did the Eagles do just that! CCU knew they were a little tired at this point, and they took advantage. After winning sets three and four in convincing fashion, the stage was set for the decisive fifth. Each team was matching one another point for point, before the Eagles won the match in thrilling fashion.
CCU had 65 kills in this match on 158 total attempts for an attack percentage of .304. Lance Wiles and Phillip Andrews were clutch in their attacks, with both combining for 41 kills. Wiles had an attack percentage of .556 while Andrews had .356. Wes Brown, filling the void for Michael Hiroskey, connected on 57 assists in the victory.
CCU (11-9, 2-3) travels for the last time this season on Wednesday when they play Robert Morris with a 7 pm start. The Eagles will then return home for the final two matches of the season on April 1 and 2. Stay updated on the athletics website for scores and recaps.
