Derek Williams comes to Cincinnati Christian University forvhis first season after serving as the Interim Head Coach last season at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Williams joined the Cincinnati State women’s basketball coaching staff in 2013 to serve as an assistant under head coach Sonya Beeler.
Williams worked with the Surge Guards and helped the team and players succeed at Cincinnati State and beyond. The Surge won conference and district titles on its way to nationals in Williams’ first season on the staff. Under his guidance, Samia Carter earned All-American honors (2016), also Cincinnati State guard Phylicia Johnson earned All-America and all-conference honors in 2013 before going on to play for NCAA Division I Eastern Illinois.
A Cincinnati native, Williams was the girl's varsity basketball head coach at Western Hills High School for seven years, a boy's varsity assistant coach at Shroder High School for two seasons and the freshmen boy's head coach at Withrow High School for three years. Additionally, Williams has 12 years of AAU coaching experience.
Williams earned a bachelor’s degree in sports science from United States Sports Academy and a master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University-Irvine.
Coach Williams resides in Cincinnati with his wife, Allyson. They have two kids, Naomi and Jayden.
Gil Thompson comes to Cincinnati Christian University for his first season after serving as the assistant coach last season at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Thompson joined the Cincinnati State women’s basketball coaching staff in 2014 to as an assistant under head coach Sonya Beeler.
Thompson worked with the Surge Post Players and helped the team and players succeed at Cincinnati State and beyond. The Surge won 20 games in each of Thompson’s two seasons. Under his guidance, Montrail Roberts (Ohio Christian University) earned Ohio Community College Athletic Association 2nd Team honors (2016), also Cincinnati State Center Jonessa Moore earned all-conference honors in 2015 before going on to play for Shawnee State.
A Detroit native, Thompson was a girl's basketball coach at Miami Valley Christian Academy in Newtown, Ohio for four years. Thompson was also coach of the Lackland AFB Training Squadron Women’s Basketball Team and has 10 years of other coaching experience.
Thompson earned a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts from Xavier University and will complete a Master’s degree in Coaching and Athlete Development in December 2016 from Xavier University.
Coach Thompson resides in Cincinnati with his wife, Kat and their children.
